Freecycle – recycling your unwanted waste

Recycling waste is always a good idea as it typically uses less energy to recycle than it does to extract the raw material and make new. Freecycle is a scheme that goes a step further (and has done for quite a while now) by being a service where people with goods to dispose of can list them for others to collect and re-use. Basically it is a re-use network.

My local Freecycle has been running for quite a while now and I have had some excellent items (Widescreen TV, Gym Kit) as well as finding a new home for some of my waste (kitchen kit, computer kit etc). Apart from the huge number of ‘wanted’ posts that have been sent in the past, the scheme runs very well and is keeping waste out of landfill.

This weekend I added some more kit I was otherwise going to throw away. Typically I had a number of requests for some of the kit, which should all go soon. On some items it is usual to get emails asking more questions – which I answer as quickly as possible. On one item, after answering the question email I got a reply saying they would collect the item the following day. This despite me not confirming they could have the item. As I was still waiting onothers to either express interest or drop out I chose to hold off replying for a few hours. Then this person started ringing me – in total I had 6 phone calls in 2 minutes – from a number I didn’t know. I chose to screen the calls and it wasn’t until the 6th call that he even bothered to leave an answerphone message (which also confirmed he had traced my address too). Needless to say, this person will never get anything from me. It is totally unacceptable for anyone to hunt for phone numbers and addresses of people who are offering things for free. I have reported these actions to my local groups owners but unfortunately it does leave a bitter taste to know people are doing things like that.

Websites Websites Websites – and now hosting too

For some reason I have yet to work out, I seem to be getting a lot of requests to create websites for different people. I personally have 4 domains, but only this site has anything resembling a website associated with it. Along with my own domains I also host the site for MVRacing - the race team I pretend to help out – and Buzz-it - a site for a friend who runs is own computer business in Stratford on Avon.

Originally I hosted all these sites on my MacDomains Silver hosting account. This was a very reasonable £5 per month offering 1Gb webspace and 14Gb bandwidth along with MySQL, Ruby on Rails and multiple sub domains. Managing the multiple websites was becoming quite complicated so I have now moved to a reseller hosting account – MacDomains themselves unfortunately do not offer these. This allows me to run all the domains on separate hosting accounts as well as selling on some of the spare space and capacity I have (when I can get round to designing the packages and creating the website). I am thinking of offering something along the lines of 1Gb webspace and 5-10Gb bandwidth per month as a starter. Let me know if you are interested. I can’t promise I will be ready to supply straight away but if there is enough interest then I will get to work on the packages.

Along side all of this I need to work on new websites for Evehosting (the domain I will use for hosting packages), Vale Cycles (A friend cycle shop which was badly damaged during the floods in July - and a website in desperate need of updating), Matt Venn (The personal site of the 15 year old driver of our race team) and a couple of others which I will announce once they are completed.

Ex-Evesham Staff Help Themselves

After the news that Evesham Technology has gone into administration, leaving 150 skilled and very loyal employees with no job, there is now a site for those affected. Conveniently it can be found at geemore.com - the name Richard Austin chose to be the new name of Evesham Technologies successor. Currently the site is just a forum for discussion of life at Evesham and news on potential new employment. Over time it is hoped to have more news etc on the site.

I wish everyone affected all the best in the search for new, and better employment. Although it might not seem like it now, this will be a good thing for you all eventually.

Windows Live Writer Beta and WordPress 2.2.2

As an enthusiastic tester of Microsoft products, I thought it only right I installed and tested using Windows Live Writer Beta to write blogs to my new WordPress based blog install. This is the first effort, but it wasn’t without problems.

  1. Setting up Live Writer was a problem as the installer didn’t like me. This could be a Vista thing though and just removing all the Windows Live Dashboard Installer files fixed this.
  2. At first WLW could not connect to the xmlrpc.php file on my server. This turned out to be easy to fix by adding the following to my .htaccess file.
    <Files xmlrpc.php>
    SecFilterInheritance Off
    </Files>
  3. I also found a weird bug in WordPress that did not like saving this post via the web admin interface. I ended up adding some of the text, then saving it as a draft so I could add the Ultimate Tag Warrior tags from the web interface before finishing the text in WLW again. The bug is very odd and seems to be caused by the web console not liking saving files with xmlrpc in them anywhere. I have only been able to add it to this post as WLW doesn’t mind and once it is in the database it can be parsed correctly by WordPress.

In future I will be playing more with WLW, so there may be some updates more often than I would normally do – but don’t hold your breath

R.I.P. Evesham Technology

After months of uncertainty, it now appears that Evesham Technology is to be no more in the form we all grew to love. At 4.45pm Friday, the loyal staff were shafted as many were told they were now unemployed with no notice period. It also transpires that they were also escorted immediately from the premises.

The rumours first started in June when 4 of the 5 directors quit the firm leaving only co-founder Richard Austin at the helm. He then put the for sale sign up on the business, confirming that he was in talks with 3 parties. Unfortunately for Evesham staff and customers he appears to have chosen the TimeUK founder Tahir Mohsan. Many will know how Time operated and how they shafted there own staff when they went bust, only to resurect as TimeUK shortly after. Rumour also has it that Evesham had been transfering assets to a new company – Geemore Technologies – which will take over from Evesham.

As a former employee of Evesham, everything started to go wrong when the company took on a new MD to replace Richard (who bacame chairman). This changed the ethos of the company, introducing redundancies which occured at least once a year and removing the companies focus on customer service. This same customer service focus was the one that kept Evesham as a leading provider with loyal customers. At one time the company had high 7 day DOA rates on new PC’s but the support of telephone and on-site technical support still pushed the company high up the ratings. It also earned the company high repeat business rates. By the time I left the company in 2003, customers support roles were seen (to me at least) as drains on the company finances and something the comapny had to have but wished they could get rid of. At this time the company also became more corporate and less friendly. Working there had always been like working at a family firm. The company relied on staff goodwill and turning it corporate led to this gradually evaporating for many.

I feel very sad for former colleagues who now face a very uncertain future at the hands of either the administrators and government (for those made redundant on Friday) or RA and TH (for those who have kept their jobs for the moment at least). I will, as always, keep an eye out for jobs that they may be able to do, and will always recommend them to my current employers if suitable jobs come up.

The first post – again

Yet again I decided I didn’t like the software I was using for the website, so everything has gone and been replaced by this WordPress based blog. I am still experimenting with what WordPress can do, so things may change overtime. So far I have set a minimalist black based theme – which I now like – and also added a gallery for showcasing some of the pictures I am planning to take. You can see some of the pictures I took of the Evesham Floods here.

Over time I will add more content here – on a truly random time frame. So don’t expect to see something new every few hours/days/weeks. Do call back again soon though.
